How to Make Money From Your Artwork

You’ve already put the effort into making the art, and unless you find other ways of making money you will only be able to sell that work once. Then you start over and make more art to sell. But what about ways that can help you to make the most of what you’ve already done?

Original Artwork

Originals can be varying sizes. The more expensive and/or larger works are harder to sell. The majority of people can’t or won’t spend a lot of money on originals, unless you are already famous. People who do buy originals value it for what it is, original. It’s a one of a kind, or the first of it’s kind, it has a sort of prestige to it. But in reality most of us just can’t afford it. So we buy prints instead.

If you stick with smaller more affordable works, in the say $25.00 to $75.00 range, more people will be able to afford your art. But DO NOT sell yourself short to make money, it isn’t fair to you. If you end up hanging on to the original for a few years, that’s ok, there might be a willing buyer one day who would like one of your early works.

Prints

Prints are great, it’s a renewable source of income, you make the big effort for the original, and now the prints are an extra source of income, that you can sell over and over again. You can also go with a limited edition print, a lot of people like the idea of art being limited, only so many people can own that particular work of art. But if you start one work as a limited edition, do not change it later to be open edition, your customers will feel cheated.

You can choose to make your own prints or have someone else make them. If you are going to make your own, I would suggest using an epson scanner for all of your scanning. For printing I would recommend an Epson or a Canon. If you can afford archival paper and good quality inks, you should do so. Do not advertise that they are if they aren’t. But if you are using archival supplies it can be a good selling feature to customers. So it can be worth the extra money, and customers might not mind paying extra if it is going to last. You might not be able to print everything yourself, such as large format or canvas prints.

For large format, canvas or if you would prefer to have someone else do your printing for you, there are lots of companies who can take on the job. Depending where you live, you can get your Don’s Photo, London Drugs, etc. to print these things. Being in Canada I have found the prices to be outrageous. So I have ordered prints and canvas prints through ezprints. I have always been impressed with their work. It’s good quality with a lot of choices and extra items you can get things printed on. One of the great things about them is they will even ship directly to your customer. That does mean you can’t sign the print or do anything extra, but it can be handy, and it will save time and money if you don’t need it shipped to you first.
